Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation Donates $5,000 to Harrisburg Area Police Athletic League in Harrisburg, PA
Irving, TX and Harrisburg, PA (September 10, 2022) – The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and WHTM-TV (abc27), the Nexstar Media Inc. television station serving Central Pennsylvania, today announced that the Foundation will donate $5,000 to the Harrisburg Area Police Athletic League (HAPAL).
Founded in 1957, HAPAL provides a wide variety of free or low-cost programs and activities that initiate and nourish active learning throughout the year for children ages 6-18. HAPAL attempts to create better understanding between the program’s participants and law enforcement, in hopes of reducing crime and recidivism in the community. The donation will be used to provide grants to college-bound graduating seniors for the next five years.
“Here at The Harrisburg Area Police Athletic League, we build bridges between law enforcement and the youth of our communities, and we believe in changing lives and giving hope to the children we serve,” said HAPAL’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board Dr. Charles E. Stuart. “It’s crucial to ensure that our youth understand their worth and their community’s worth. We facilitate programming to assist in supplying the self-tools needed to become positive, productive citizens. We consider our programming, both educational and athletics, valuable in teaching our youth many of life’s opportunities and possible downfalls. We consider our work with the children as a step in preventing incarceration. We are an alternative to crime organization, and we believe every kid should have a PAL.”
Commenting on the donation, abc27 Vice President and General Manager Robert Bee said: “The Harrisburg Area Police Athletic League plays a vital role throughout the region, offering educational, athletic and recreation activities to create trust and understanding between law enforcement agencies and today’s youth. This trust helps develop positive attitudes towards law enforcement officers and leads them on paths towards a better future. abc27’s anchor, Valerie Pritchett, has been a passionate supporter of the Harrisburg Area Police Athletic League for many years and is dedicated to youth crime prevention. Giving back to the local communities served by Nexstar in 116 markets across the country is core to the company’s mission and we are proud that the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation is making this donation in recognition of the deep relationship between WHTM-TV and HAPAL.”
The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation’s mission is to contribute to and work with public charities and non-profit organizations to improve the communities in which Nexstar Media and its subsidiaries do business. The foundation was originally established in 1958 and it makes donations of approximately $350,000 annually.
